NYC
to make for a long time. I have carried cameras through the streets
of New York for years without finding it, all the while thinking
about how to make it and make it right. This picture is New York all
at once -- construction, ads, underground steam, taxis, buses and
all. Leah and I were walking down 42nd St. when I noticed we were
approaching the typical orange and white tower. Just past it were
these workers, one of whom was jumping on the freight to make it
settle in the right place. We continued walking and I readied my
camera until we were right in the spot where the steam would be a
backdrop to the moment and I wheeled around and fired off three
frames and kept moving. The feeling was the culmination of years of
thinking about it, of theorizing street photography, of getting into
the right spot to react with a camera, to be on the streets of new
york making split-second art.

Intensity
arm from taking pictures of women's lacrosse this afternoon. It sure
beat the hell out of sitting in an office all day. This athlete,
Traci Landy, is really good at what she does, namely scoring goals
and setting up assists. She was a huge contributor to BU's 16-5
trouncing of UAlbany in the first round of the America East
conference playoffs.

Editors' Pick

22 April 2008, Boston, MA - I found these two hits from my coverage of the marathon. This shot was posted as both an "Editors' Pick" and one of the 14 best photos of the day from around the world. The funny thing is I debated with myself for a while about whether I should take it, since I shot a very similar image two years ago in basically the same spot. The older picture was what inspired CJ to hire me for this running of Boston's biggest race, so I figured it was worth a second try. And it worked, so here it is.

Marathon
to the start line of the Boston Marathon to shoot for the European
Pressphoto Agency. I really feel like this job was the final 'coming
of age' assignment that brought me into the league of professionals.
These are some of my favorites from today -- I pushed hard to find
good pictures and I think my effort paid off. Now I have to nap and
stop pretending to form sentences.

Sunday
Marathon Sunday
Boylston Street where the Boston Marathon finishes. Today in the
vestibule, they offered a map for people to locate whence they've
come to participate in the 112th running of this race. Today's
service was specially tailored for the athletes with pervasive
imagery of endurance running (and rolling) and a special blessing on
those brave enough to go the distance from Hopkinton to Boston.
Tomorrow, the whole city will come to a standstill to watch a few
Kenyans beat the adidas running pants off athletes from every other
corner of the map, and I get to be there making pictures.

Empty spaces
will be a Starbucks. For now there's just a strange empty space.

Reflections
commence a study on reflections that I come across. I've been reading
a lot about various philosophers as well as going through an extended
period of self-reflexivity that I have inexplicably suppressed from
my photography. I'm not sure why, but the first image I posted was of
a reflection and, noticing that fact, I have since avoided making
pictures of reflections -- save the one of Carlos Santana's
sunglasses. Today, when I couldn't figure out the reason for NOT
making reflective pictures, I decided to make that an intentional
goal of mine to find and photograph interesting reflections. I'll let
the definition of the word provide a basis on which to consider these
images.

And the sky turns to fire
while to evoke the lyrics of the Patty Griffin song 'Useless Desires'
when she sings "How the sky turns to fire against a telephone wire /
And even I'm getting tired of useless desires." This is a remarkable
song that I try to share with others, and it seems to come up and
help me when I most need it. The song was given to me by Melissa
Range, whose influence on my life continues to be felt in substantial
ways.
